As another year gets under way can I wish readers a very happy, peaceful and successful 2008. A year when dreams are realised and the injustices of the past are laid to rest.
I truly hope that this is a year when we all move closer to achieving some sort of settlement in our lives and can move on and be free of the past.
I believe that this year’s judicial enquiry will allow us to have a closer look at the legal and political culture in Scotland that creates and perpetuates injustice. How the Lockerbie scandal is resolved will tell us a lot about the lessons that have or have not been learned. How individual victims of injustice are treated will tell us whether the existing incestuous and secretive system will ever become more open and accountable.
The truth is however that this is not going to happen without continued campaigning at every level within the Scottish justice system.
For forums like this to play a part in that change we need to move away from attacking anything and everyone within the system and come up with positive ideas and suggestions to move change forward.
Hopefully this year’s conference will prove a catalyst for change and provide a focus for those of us who are determined that even one injustice in Scotland is one too many.
