Today, Iain posted the Chairman's report of the Y-7 Committee of the International Association for Identification on the home page of www.shirleymckie.com as "IAI: The Final Word." I wish I thought it were so.
This week marks ten years since I first looked at Y-7 and, with a terrible knot in my stomach, recognized the tragic mistake that had been made. I thought Shirley's trial was "the final word." Then I thought the inquiry by HMIC was "the final word." When the MacKay/Robertson inquiry was concluded, I was sure that was "the final word." Then there was the political farce that was supposed to be "the final word." And, of course, there were several other secret inquiries, each of which was intended to be "the final word." And yet now there is still another inquiry underway. Will it be "the final word?" Please forgive me my doubts.
Ten long years have passed since I first compared Y-7 to Shirley's fingerprints and started on this journey through the Scottish Criminal Justice System. The knot has been gone from my stomach for a long time now, and so has the thought that it was a "mistake."
The true "final word" will be that recorded in the history books after all the principals, myself included, are dead. I am confident in my conviction the history books will echo the IAI's Y-7 Committee Report. But that report, "The Final Word?" I wish I thought it were so.
