Lucy Adams and others in the Herald newspaper are developing debate on policing in Scotland - whether it would be better to have a national force and how the police should relate to their support services like forensics and drugs.
I believe we require a commission to look at the whole justice system and examine among other things the many issues raised on this forum. The current system is clearly moribund and unfit for purpose and requires more than the tinkering that is currently favoured.

The second link isnt working Mr Mckie.
I too believe that there should be a public debate on the issues we all talk about here on this forum.
I believe that the public should be educated in what goes on in the system and asked for their feed back on what changes could and should be made.
A complete overhaul is what is needed and the judiciary, SCCRC and all involved in these matters need to come into the 21st century.
To be fair, the police are the only ones who see what really goes on in the real world. The rest only appear to have studied laws and procedure.
Many of the laws and procedures are outdated and old fashioned. |

Taken From the herald Article:
| Quote: | | "The time is long overdue for a commission into the whole operation of the Scottish justice system, policing, prosecution, courts, forensic services, legal profession and organisations like the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, which some argue are no longer fit for purpose." |
The SCCRC are without doubt the most corrupt organisation I have ever had the misfortune to have any dealings with.
Labour have created an out of control monster who are answerable to No-One and have more powers than our very Highest Judges and Courts.
It is not so much the organisation but those who run it, who are not fit for purpose.
Their Chief Executive is, it would seem able to answer complaints levelled against himself and able to reject cases with Competent & Arguable grounds of appeal which our appeal courts would be duty bound to accept.
This power must be withdrawn from SCCRC to make them more accountable.
They are funded by Public Funds, but for some perverse reason are not answerable to the public.
They can hide information from our MSPs whenever they want to.
I do not advocate the closure of SCCRC because they are a much needed organisation but they are in much need of a review after ten years and in dire need of a change of staff.
Properly staffed SCCRC could become a great organisation, but at present there are far too many question marks over their conduct in some cases. |

I agree that the whole justice system in Scotland needs to be reviewed in a holistic fashion.
There seems to be a great deal of concern regarding political interference with Policing in Scotland.
However, unlike Police Chiefs, politicians are democratically elected and are far more accountable to the public than any over empowered Chief Constable (or Chief of Police), should there be a National Force who are, or would continue to be, impervious to public opinion.
Lets get it started 'the sooner the better' in my humble opinion.
