Is it not time they just let this old sick man go home?

Great train robber Biggs, 79, is being treated for pneumonia at a hospital in Norwich after being moved from his prison cell.

His son Michael, 34, said the Ministry of Justice should take pity on his father and set him free.

"My father is a very sick man who will be 80 this year," said Mr Biggs, who lives in London. Why don't they just show some compassion and free him so he can be with his family? Why waste taxpayers' money now? My dad isn't a danger to anyone."

Biggs was a member of the a 15-strong gang which attacked the Glasgow to London mail train on August 8 1963 before making off with £2.6 million.

He was moved to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital from Norwich prison on Friday.

Hospital sources said he was comfortable and was expected to return to prison early next week.

Michael Biggs is hoping prison authorities will allow him to visit his father in the next few days.

The Prison Service said that there were no set rules about visiting arrangements for relatives of prisoners in hospital and that consideration was given on a case by case basis, depending on the medical condition of the prisoner.

A spokeswoman added: "No prisoner is given special privileges. The family of prisoners are discouraged from visiting them during short stays in outside hospital because of the potential for disruption to other patients and the management of security."
