Posted: Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:16 am Post subject: Colin Stagg 2 Apologies In One Day |
|
|
I rember the policewoman who tried to "HoneyTrap" Colin Stagg.
If I remember correctly she even slept with him.
If the Met had not wrongly concentrated on Stagg then Napper might not have been able to Murder again.
I just wonder how many he has killed in between these two and will he end up like Tobin etc etc A Mass murderer maybe even a Peter Sutcliffe.
I must though take my hat off to the Met for todays apologies which show times are changing and Maybe Just Maybe there is room for Truth and Reconciliation Yet.
Perhaps Mr Stagg can now move on without the constant looking over his shoulder because the Public have always viewed him as the murderer that got away with Rachell Nickell's murder.
Now we all know for sure he was Wholly Innocent.
I wish him well and hope he can now move on in life

As well as an apology from the accused the met Police also apologised here:

And not before time too

I agree Wullie
Sadly this seems to happen when police focus on one person who might be a bit "weird" and then they lose sight of everything else.
Mr Stagg fitted right into the "weird" idea so why look for anyone else?
Hopefully lessons have been learned.
I also wish Mr Stagg and his family well |

Hi Scotkaz
I also see this comment in the Herald From Rachell Nickell's Parents:
| Quote: | | Mr and Mrs Nickell continued to believe for many years that Mr Stagg was their daughter's killer and even considered taking civil action against him. |
Found here:
http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/n..._Scot_and_smothered_her_child.php
I hope they too can now move forward.
The saddest part for me is the fact her parents no longer see her son, their Grandson.
| Quote: | "After a few years he moves abroad and later you are stopped from seeing your grandson. You become even more wary of strangers."
Mr Nickell told the Old Bailey that he and his wife no longer see their grandchild after his father became so traumatised by the murder that he fled the country. |
Perhaps now it is all over Rachell's traumatised partner will return to let her parents see him.
Maybe her parents can even speak to Colin Stagg and bury the hatchet so to speak which might help them come to terms with what happened to their Daughter.
I really cannot understand how they can praise the police though:
| Quote: | | But we never felt at any time that the officers and staff involved in the investigation gave less than their very best." |
Strong words of praise considering the Police would have tried to convince them of Stagg's Guilt for years and even got a police Woman to sleep with him.
I have as yet to see the Police Apologise to her.
If memory serves me right she needed counselling and left the Police Force due to stress.
Can anyone confirm this ? |

see the site above
Using the pseudonym "Lizzie James" an undercover policewoman from SO10 (then the Metropolitan Police's Special Operations Group) contacted Stagg, posing as a friend of a woman with whom he used to be in contact via a lonely-hearts column. Over a period of five months she then attempted to obtain information from him by feigning a romantic interest, meeting him, speaking to him on the telephone and exchanging letters containing sexual fantasies. During a meeting in Hyde Park, they spoke about the Nickell murder, but Stagg later claimed that he had only played along with the topic because he wanted to pursue the romance[3]. Britton later said he disagreed with use of the fantasy-filled letters and knew nothing of them until after they had been sent[4]. "Lizzie" won Stagg's confidence and drew out his violent fantasies, but Stagg did not admit to the murder. Police released a taped conversation between "Lizzie" and Stagg in which "Lizzie" claimed to enjoy hurting people, to which Stagg mumbled: "Please explain, as I live a quiet life. If I have disappointed you, please don't dump me. Nothing like this has happened to me before." When "Lizzie" went on to say "If only you had done the Wimbledon Common murder, if only you had killed her, it would be all right," Stagg replied: "I'm terribly sorry, but I haven't."[5]
Believing on the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service that there was sufficient evidence to convict Stagg, the police arrested and charged him with Nickell's murder.
Lizzie James" quit the police force in 1998, eventually taking early retirement.[11] With the support of the Police Federation she too sued the Metropolitan Police for damages arising from the investigation. In 2001, shortly before it was due to be heard, her case was settled out of court and she received £125,000. Her solicitor said: "[T]he willingness of the Metropolitan Police to pay substantial damages must indicate their recognition that she sustained serious psychiatric injury."[12] Stagg had offered to testify against "Lizzie James" in order to try to prevent what he claimed was an unfair demand on the taxpayer but, as the case was settled out of court, Stagg made no deposition. |

Oh dear me here I go again I am beginning to think I am hard hearted.
So this police woman, a person who was doing her job - who could have refused to do this work, who knew what the job entailed, fully surrounded by fellow officers at all times gets £125.000 - no opposition and relatively quickly.
Meanwhile Colin Stagg who will never regain his anonymity has lived life like a leper for all these years, who has had his life put in danger from nutters who believed he was guilty. Who thought, as a virgin he at last had a girl friend, who spent time in prison with some seriously guilty prisoners who could easily have killed him and who has many years later received £275.000.
His real crime was he was a loner, lonely, read new age books on witchcraft, read books on history had a dog, took it for walks and admitted he was in the woods that day.
Anybody see a lack of balance in this. _________________ We are the parents in Scotland denied justice for our children who had illegal post mortem's or had organs removed illegally at post mortem. |

Hi Lydia
Colin Stagg was a means and easy target for the police to clear up a messy crime that put the public in a state of fear and alarm.
This put pressure on the police who in turn asked the woman to sleep with him to get info that could never have been available.
Kinda sounds like the Luke Mitchell case all over again only in his case the guise came in the form of an officer named as the "Family Liasion Officer" sent out fishing.
His Compensation was £706.000 not £275.000 and for what he has been through this is a meagre, paltry, contemptible sum.
No mention though of charging him Bed & Board for the months he spent in Jail |

The evidence of Nappers Guilt in these horrendous and horrific cases was ignored by the Police says stepfather of murdered victim.
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news...ree-to-kill-again-86908-20981449/
| Quote: | | Last night, Samantha's stepdad Jack Morrison said: "The police should have investigated Napper at the time, and he might not have been free to brutally murder Samantha and Jazmine." |
| Quote: | | Jack, 74, of Inverbervie, Kincardineshire, said: "Samantha and Jazmine could be alive today if police had not been so blindly focused on Colin Stagg." |
Quotes taken from here:
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news...-was-sex-attacker-86908-20981749/
| Quote: | | Police failed to pursue him when his fingerprints were found on a buried gun and let him go when they caught him lurking by an open window. |
| Quote: | | When he was arrested for other offences, detectives did not consider his stash of knives, hand-drawn maps and disturbing notes about women significant. |
| Quote: | | Napper was named twice more as a suspect for the Green Chain rapes but when he missed two appointments to give DNA, nothing was done. |
The most disturbing came from his Mother here:
| Quote: | In 1989, the schizophrenic's mother told police her son had confessed to raping a woman but the tip-off was not investigated properly.
Three years later, Napper stabbed Rachel, 23, to death in front of her son Alex, two, on Wimbledon Common. |
The only question now for the police is WHY ? |

Nice to see Rachell Nickell's boyfriend apologise to Colin Stag:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8365506.stm
What is more interesting though is his call for an enquiry into how Napper went on to kill another mother and child:
IPCC complaint over Nickell death
The partner of Rachel Nickell has complained to the police watchdog about failures by the Metropolitan force in the years before her killer struck.
Miss Nickell, 23, was knifed repeatedly by Robert Napper on Wimbledon Common in 1992 in front of her two-year-old son.
Her partner Andre Hanscombe has learned that the Independent Police Complaints Commission has already begun "scoping" the case, his lawyer Kate Maynard said.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the IPCC has sent on a complaint.
On Monday Mr Hanscombe apologised to former suspect in the case Colin Stagg for the ordeal he suffered. Mr Stagg spent 13 months in jail after a wrongful arrest.
Mr Hanscombe's complaint to the IPCC follows a police apology to the family of Miss Nickell after serial rapist Napper last year admitted killing her.
“ It is my duty to all those touched by the flawed investigations, and to the public in general, to seek justice ”
Andre Hanscombe
He was ordered to be detained in Broadmoor indefinitely after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of his diminished responsibility.
Police also apologised to the family of Samantha Bissett, 27, whom Napper, 42, killed, along with her four-year-old daughter Jazmine, in 1993.
It emerged that detectives had been given tip-offs about Napper's criminality as far back as 1989, including from his own mother.
Mr Hanscombe said: "When Napper was convicted of killing Rachel, the glaring question, why the investigation had taken so long and had been handled so badly, remained unanswered.
"To have found out in December 2008 that Rachel's death may have been prevented initially left me numb."
Mr Hanscombe is demanding that, if appropriate, police officers face disciplinary action.
He continued: "Now that I have had time to come to terms with it, I feel determined to bring all of the mistakes into the light.
"My hope is to make sure that a similar chain of circumstances is never allowed to develop again.
"It is my duty to all those touched by the flawed investigations, and to the public in general, to seek justice."
An IPCC spokesman said: "We have assigned two of our most experienced investigators to initially scope the case and that work has begun."
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The IPCC has today [Tuesday] sent us the complaint they received.
"It is only right this complaint will be properly dealt with and we will now consider what the appropriate next step is."
