Crown Office "rejoicing" at abandonment of Megrahi case
Ian Ferguson, investigative journalist and author of "Cover Up of Convenience" has said that the Crown Office in Edinburgh were "rejoicing" when Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi dropped his appeal.

He also hinted that the progress of the case had been deliberately slowed down whilst Megrahi's cancer debilitated him.

"From the start there was a determination to try to prevent this appeal being heard," he said.

"It opened but never got off the ground, with stall after stall as each month Megrahi weakened with the cancer that was killing him. There was rejoicing in the Crown Office in Edinburgh when he was released and the appeal abandoned."

Ferguson had visited Megrahi many times and was privy to close quarters insights into how the progress of the case affected him. His revelations support the growing acknowledgement that decisions made at international political level were forced through the Scottish legal system.

"There may well be political manoeuvres behind his release but at the heart was a decision to save the face of the Scottish judiciary - in particular the Crown Prosecution, who would have been shown to have been involved in an abuse of process by non-disclosure of witness statements. Megrahi was made the scapegoat for whatever reason and from that point everything went in reverse to try to make the crime fit."

"Had this appeal gone ahead and witnesses recalled and cross-examined, I believe it would be shown that some had most definitely perjured themselves or deliberately misled the court. It is no wonder that some people were hoping Megrahi would die before certain witnesses were called."

The abandonment of Mr Megrahi's appeal has made me ashamed to be Scottish. The Scottish Government has attributed to this blatant cover up and whatever governing politicians say, I firmly believe he was forced to abandon the appeal. Absolutely disgraceful and corruption at the highest level.

Finally, people in this country can now see the corruption that exists. Think about all the Miscarrriage of Justice victims in Scotland who fight the system that wrongly convicted them in the first place. They are also up against it.

The fresh evidence in the megrahi case will never be heard in court. The conviction will never be overturned and the real perpetrators will never be brought to justice. That is what you call corruption. Plain and simple.

Good luck to anyone who comes into contact with the Scottish Justice System. They will need it.

The Crown Office are not the only ones revelling in the current 'let's hate Kenny MacAskill and Scotland' campaign.

Most contributors to this forum will agree that Mr MacAskill has a lot to answer for in his domestic justice policies. I do however believe he is in danger of becoming the fall guy for the deceit and procrastination of the UK and US governments and the judiciary, prosecution and police responsible for the Lockerbie investigation, trial and subsequent appeals.

While welcoming legitimate criticism of the Scottish Government let’s not forget that the Lockerbie investigation and arraignment of Mr. Al Megrahi was at best incompetent and at worst criminal. The verdict delivered by the ‘Scottish Court’ in the Netherlands that consigned him to prison remains a stain on Scottish jurisprudence. The political deception from Mrs Thatcher to Jack Straw only serves to highlight why a large majority in this country accept little that they are fed by the spin doctors.

This has implications for our democracy and if Scotland chooses to break away from this destructive cycle of deception I for one will applaud them all the way. If they fail to grasp this opportunity then the independence they crave will become an even more distant dream.
