Email a Scottish Prisoner

You need to know their name, prison and their number.

Email a Prisoner has the following goals:

To help family & friends communicate easily and frequently with prisoners.

To reduce thoughts of self-harm/suicide through increased communication.

To assist prisoners in preparation for release with multiple partner agencies.

Communication is a major factor in prison life and the lack of it can have horrendous consequences. Email a Prisoner offers a quick, efficient, secure alternative method of communication for prisoners their families, friends, legal professionals and related organisations -  meaning prisoners can receive more frequent and varied communication. Documentation continually states prisoners who are able to maintain family ties are 6 times less likely to re-offend.

Sounds a good idea Karen.

Has this site  checked out as legitimate?
NanaKaren

Yes Iain it is legitimate. I have used it and the prisoner gets the email message the next day.

the SPS have a leaflet about it.  Its been used a lot in the rest of UK for a while.

Thanks Karen. Why can't we just e-mail prisoners direct without having to pay a private company?

Any thoughts?

et

In US they have a similar thing but there the inmate gets an electronic box to download the emails and read them in their cell.  They get a certain amount of time to reply to the mail.  If they dont have access to the prison computer they can write their letter and it is scanned and sent as an attachment.  http://jpay.com/

In US they can have video visits and have money sent in via this too.

Seems even USA uses a private company. It seems they partner with the corrections services and I would assume they do here too. So perhaps that means they get a cut off the money people pay to use it?  Looks like big business. and I am sure mutually beneficial to SPS

It costs 35p per email. Minimum amount you can add is a fiver. It works out cheaper than stamps and gets there quicker.

The down side is here in Scotland the person cannot email us back which is probably down to them not having the staff to cover it or not being willing to allow it.

I ran a check on this service with the Scottish Prison Service.

They are aware of the service and pass e-mails onto prisoners.

I did query why no direct e-mail access from individuals was allowed. Issue is the administration it would require to allow such direct access which I can understand. As things stand the company undertake the co-ordination and transfer.

On balance I feel the service is a useful way of making contact, is probably quicker and cheaper than some alternatives and helps  prisoners feel they are more in contact with the outside world.
