Petition launched to sack justice secretary over open prisons row

LABOUR yesterday launched a public petition calling for under-fire justice secretary Kenny MacAskill to be sacked.

It will be included on tens of thousands of Euro election leaflets.

The move follows mounting anger over the SNP government's handling of two dangerous criminals who went on the run from Castle Huntly open prison, near Dundee.

Armed robber Brian Martin, known as "The Hawk", finally gave himself up last week but - as MacAskill admitted - he should not have been in an open prison because of his record.

And yesterday, it emerged that convicted murderer John Brown had also gone on the run from Castle Huntly.

Salmond and MacAskill were told of the escape but kept quiet about it, saying it was a matter for police to alert the public.

Hammer Yesterday, the government confirmed MacAskill had approved hammer killer Brown's home leave from Castle Huntly.

But MacAskill told the BBC yesterday he would "absolutely not" resign over the scandal.

Labour justice spokesman Richard Baker said: "Anyone would have thought that as Kenny MacAskill signed the temporary release order for John Brown that he'd have acted immediately when he absconded.

"Instead, he sat next to Alex Salmond at First Minister's Questions and watched his boss mislead parliament."

Meanwhile, Scots Tory leader Annabel Goldie also accused Salmond of "misleading parliament".

Salmond's spokesman insisted it was an "operational matter for Tayside police" to alert the public that Brown was on the run.

I have had a look and cannot find the petition mentioned.

I also have a pile of Voting leaflets from everyone who wants our vote and there is no link on there either

I've just had a look at the "boycott scotland" website, and, although I do feel for the families who believe Megrahi was guilty, I can't help but think there's a huge display of double standards here.

Firstly, all the nonsense about putting oil before people's lives - of course, the American government has never done any such thing - perish the thought.

Then there's all the talk about "justice" and "guilt," missing the point completely that the SCCRC had referred the case back to the appeal court, which it wouldn't have done unless there were serious doubts about the safety of the conviction.

Then the hysteria - boycott Scottish businesess, don't visit scotland, boycott BP etc, etc, studiously ignoring the fact that the US do not intend to try to block a visit by Gadaffi to the UN next month.

They speak of the irony of the UK having been the victim of numerous terrorist attacks "on its own soil" - two points here - (1) - who funded many of those attacks???? (2) where did Pan Am 103 explode, and the pieces land ?

One relative is quoted as saying

''I would like this fellow, before he breathes his last breath, to tell us the story,'' said Helen Engelhardt, whose husband, Tony Hawkins, was killed on the plane. ''We need the truth. We need to know what really happened.''

On that one point, at least, we have agreement.

Incidentally, Keiran refers to the petition on boycott scotland as a "respose by the Scottish people to the terrible decision made my Mr McAskill" - what, are we to believe the Scottish people are calling for a boycott against themselves???

I would like to align myself with Angeline's comments.

Aside from any debate about whether Kenny MacAskill was right or wrong the hypocrisy and double standards on display by the UK and US governments is truly staggering.

Having done little over the years to assist in revealing the truth about Lockerbie - remember the British government’s claims of public interest immunity over documents required by Mr Al Megrahi's defence – they have the audacity to criticise the Scottish Government and the Scottish people for exercising humanity.

It might be that we have lessons to learn in the aftermath of this affair but certainly not from these two duplicitous and dishonest governments.

Hi Kieran,

Thanks for that however your posting advertises the 'Boycott Scotland' site and your petition is linked on that site. This indicates your support for the sentiments expressed by the Americans.

I have absolutely no problem with your voicing your concerns and anger, some of which I can understand, but in focussing in on the decision to free a dying man as reasons to dismiss Mr MacAskill I cannot follow your logic.

If you want to raise a petition outlining the failures of governments at home and abroad to address the issues of Lockerbie over the years and the failure of our Scottish Justice System to protect the innocent then my signature is guaranteed.

Calling for Mr MacAskill's resignation is not going to right these wrongs and effectively to my mind focuses attention away from the real wrongdoers who must be rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of the Scottish Government being identified as fall guys for their deceit and failure.

While Gordon Brown is telling the world no deal was ever done over Megrahi todays papers are full of quotes from the Libyan Government saying Megrahi was always on the negotiating table.

Once again showing greed over Justice.

If true then Mr MacAskill has allowed himself to be used as a puppet and for this reason alone he should stand down as Justice Secretary.

On top of that I believe in the Innocence of Megrahi, and feel that Because he has been faced with an appalling decision which saw him with no option but to drop his appeal (Blackmailed) after the SCCRC have spent £1.8 Million of our money and found serious flaws with his conviction, Mr MacAskill allowed this to happen and should Resign.

For Mr MacAskill to stand up in front of the world and claim Scotlands Police could not protect Megrahi if he was released on bail is scurrilous to say the least and a ridiculous statement, And for this he should "Resign"

The dropping of the appeal allowed Kenny MacAskill to stand up and praise the Scottish Judicial System who we all know is lacking and a disgrace in our names, and again, for this he should Resign.

The biggest shock I think the Americans will have is that Mr MacAskill stood up and claimed he believed in megrahi's conviction then Basically set him free.

It seems when we look at the American system of justice Megrahi would have been Hung, Drawn & Quartered and never given any chance to set his conviction straight or right his wrongful conviction.
Compassion certainly is not seen in any of their Judicial System.

Had I thought Megrahi guilty I could in no circumstances ever support his release under Compassionate Release but would have supported him being Bailed to a safe house to continue his appeal.

We must remember the very big hullaballoo over Myra Hyndley, How many on this forum would have supported her release for the crimes she was convicted of.

We must also remember the actions of the British Government and Home Secretary when the decision to free her popped up.

She would never have been shown any Compassion by the Public Nor any Government Officials.

In my mind Mr MacAskill made the wrong decision and brought disgrace on our country and he should resign.

As for the Boycott Scotland site, Well we could name a million reasons to boycott America and we don't, so rise above it folks and ignore.

I don't disagree with the release of Mr Megrahi. What I didn't like was the welcome that was orchestrated when he returned to Lybia. I can understand people being upset at this.

I feel it was right to release him and feel it was wrong that he had to drop his appeal before he could be released on "compassionate" grounds.

This whole case is highly emotive for many people.

I do agree that mcAskill is probably the fall guy in all of this.

Time will tell I guess.

Hi Scotkaz,

I totally agree although the 'heroes return' might have been anticipated.

The dropping of the appeal, which was not required to obtain compassionate release, is a blow to those who wished for a full enquiry into the whole Lockerbie affair.

Let's hope that today's debate and future revelations bring some clarity to the situation.

I fear however that no meaningful enquiry will ever be heard now that the political and economic goals of the British and American governments have been realised.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking but then this is what so many contributors to this forum have been experiencing for years.
