Why Megrahi Dropped His Appeal

Today's Scotsman tells why he dropped his appeal and puts to Bed Kenny MacAskills's denial that a deal hasn't been struck with Megrahi.

Maggie Scott QC told the court the following:

Quote:
Ms Scott said it was Megrahi's belief that abandoning the appeal would assist in the early determination of his applications to the Scottish ministers for either a transfer to prison in Libya, or release on compassionate grounds.

This coupled with MacAskill's visit to Greenock tells us all a deal has already been done.

While I can understand Megrahi's decision in abandoning his appeal he has doomed his children to always be known as those of the Lockerbie Bomber.

I hope his family come back after he dies claiming he was "unduly pressured" into dropping his appeal by MacAskill and the scottish Government who are acting in cahoots with London, That would be a fine mess for our courts to try and sort out especially under European Courts Of Human Rights Acts who clearly state no one should be pressured by any Government Minister.

While many of us on this forum have been told by Mr MacAskill that Government Ministers cannot become involved with Individual Cases, exactly what has he done with Megrahi ?

Surely his actions are outwith his remit if he cannot become involved with Individual cases.

I wish Megrahi and his family all the very best, but cannot get over him dropping his appeal when I think they would have had to concede eventually and release him on compassionate grounds.

His children are all destined now to always be known as the children of Megrahi "The Lockerbie Bomber"

Does anyone agree that the Scottish legal system is in a bad way now? I've seen a few deliberate cover ups over the last few years, but this one takes the biscuit. . . so far!

alleged lockerbie bomber

This country's name is now tarnished but in my view its not the fact the SNP released Mr Megrahi that has caused it. Its the abandonment of his appeal that is the national disgrace.
Mr Megrahi should have been released on Interim Liberation like many other appellants because the SCCRC spent millions and concluded he may be innocent. He then should have pursued his appeal whether alive or dead - not only for him but for the people who deserve to know the truth about this case.

I believe he is innocent, so I believe it was the correct decision to release him but forcing him to abandon his appeal is a national disgrace and simply does not make sense. The abandonment of his appeal will affect this country. If the Appeal Court had deemed he had suffered a Miscarriage of Justice then all these countries damning his release would conclude we were correct in releasing him in the first place.

I appreciate the American victims families who still condemn Megrahi are hurting but I must say that surely these people need to look at the evidence and question the conviction. I can't believe the difference of opinion between what the american families believe and what the rest think of the conviction.

As far as the celebrations go, I don't grudge Mr Megrahi celebrating etc. This man was fitted up by the americans and the uk and when one is fitted up and then released, surely a celebration is in order. I done it myself. Not once has the media or the Americans even conceived he might be innocent even though the fresh evidence supports it.

More than anything Scotland has been used to protect the Americans and the whole of the UK who have acted corruptly over this fiasco.

It certainly wasn't created by SNP, indeed it was under our last Labour Corrupt Government who saw Jamieson reject all calls for Inquiries.

The same Jamieson most of us on this forum wrote to only to have our pleas rejected when she acted as Justice Minister.

One Government is as bad as another and they are all in cahoots with each other over these crucial matters.

At the end of the day what mattered most to MacAskill was trying to preserve our Justice System and he has failed Miserably.

I fully agree with you that he should have been bailed to the safe house in Glasgow (Newton Mearns) where his family could have joined him in his last days but most importantly he could have continued with his appeal and when he died his family could have continuued his appeal mas with the Snake Coubrough. (another SCCRC referral)

It is a total nonsense for SCCRC to use £1.8 Million of public funds for MacAskill to just banish the case in a moment.

Faced with what was to come out in Public like Diplomats warned not to take flight Pan Am 103.

The chip not pointing to Libya at-all.

Gauci not identifying him but pointing the finger to Abu Talb who ended up giving evidence against Megrahi.

For allowing themselves to be used by the Labour in London who didn't have the balls to correct their mistakes, Kenny MacAskill deserves nothing less than the sack.

He has brought Scotland into disrepute throughout the world which we may never recover from, bringing shame, yet he thinks he has done the right thing, You couldn't make this up.

SNP Used As Pawns By Broon should be the headlines.

Wonder what rewards they have been promised for Freeing Megrahi

Megrahi Case Always On Table

For proof of what I have said about collusion between Broon and SNP we need only read the following statement.

The claim was made by Saif al-Islam, the son of Libyan leader Colonel Gadaffi's, who told Libyan TV Megrahi's case was "always on the negotiating table" during talks with the UK on commercial contracts.

Was the Libyan Oil more important than sorting out the Megrahi case ?

Seems so.

Astonishing
