You are right Wullie, but that does not mean it is a good thing for the person facing a judge in the dock, who is about to come up for re-election.
If a judge wants to be re-elected, he also wants to be popular so that he will be re-elected - think about that for a minute.
However, Judges in the Supreme Court (primarily the Appeals Court) have life tenure, they are elected by the President and supported through the Senate, so unless they show bad behaviour or some other terrible crime, they are in situ until they die or retire or resign.
I'm sure you know all of this anyway. It is an entirely different system to ours, and every bit as complex I feel.
