I was looking at some Government statistics recently which show that the number of recorded crimes has dropped, yet the number of people in prison has increased. The report itself states that this "reflects a change in sentencing behaviour" - in other words, there's less crime, but more severe sentecnes for those who do appear before the courts.
Add this to the 95% conviction rate in the Sherrif Courts, and 87% in the high courts, and what we're looking at is this - almost everyone who finds themselves in court facing charges of any sort will land up convicted, and will face tight sentencing.
Doesn't fit with all the rhetoric about too many offenders getting off on a technicality, or our CJS being "too soft on crime" does it?
I'll look out the links for the two reports which contain the above stats, and post them later.
