I was a serving officer with Strathclyde police up until a few Months ago when I was required to resign as a result of a disciplinary hearing.

I was struck on the head with a bottle whilst on a nightout with my mates. I subsequently tried to defend myself when I was punched again on a number of occassions.

I subdued this male and waited for the police to arrive.

I attended work the next day only to be told that I was subject of a complaint against the police arising from a member of the public who said I assaulted the male who had struck me with the bottle.

This same male attended at the office and told the initial investigating officer he had struck me on the head with the bottle. HE WALKED FROM THE POLICE OFFICE WITHOUT BEING DETAINED OR CHARGED!!!

The same male also admitted in three seperate statements that I never once assaulted him and the police casualty surgeons reports were supporting that.

Although I had a suspected broken cheekbone, I was the one that was told I would be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal!!

After two long years of worrying what would happen to me, I was asked to resign this year on the say so of one eyewitness who clearly got everything wrong!!!

My appeal has been lodged on the grounds of what I have desribed above. Fingers crossed!!!

Good luck with your case we need honest policemen, we do not need to lose them through a jobsworth. Is it that you are being made an example of or is their another reason. From what we have heard lately it seems we have several police officers who have criminal records working for the police force so why pick on you. On the other hand it feels good that the police force take no chances with violent behaviour, how did they get this so wrong.

I worked with an ex-police officer just over a year ago who was forced out of his job because he complained about certain practices which he felt were verging on, or actual, abuses of police power. His life was made an absolute misery by senior officers until he finally resigned.

I'm not sure what to think in your case. Were there other factors before this incident, or did it come right out of the blue?

Having worked with employment law in a past life, I'm surprised that, with so much evidence to the contrary, this has gone as far as it did - the level of protection for employees is a common complaint amongst employers.

Is it perhaps political - you were on a night out with your mates - maybe they were afraid of adverse publicity - "Off duty cop assaults civilian" type of headline?

I really don't know, just throwing some ideas around here.

I know of a Grampian Police Officer who was assaulted off-duty by a male in possession of a stanley knife.

Medical experts testified that the injuries had been caused by a sharp bladed instrument, however the assailant was not Prosecuted.

The Officer was charged with a breach of the peace and convicted (later quashed at the High Court)

I wish you the best of luck, this event occurred 5 years ago and the Officer still seeks justice.

I just had a thought, you don't say much about the witness, could it be they know you, have you arrested them or someone they know, do they have a private grudge.

Has any police officer made these enquiries

I don't know thw witness but he obviously had a grudge against the police and when I alerted people around me that I was off duty, he has obviously acted on that!!!

I don't doubt for a second your story because as a career law enforcement professional, I have seen many a good cop take it in the rear from higher-ups who wanted to get rid of him. And I've seen many a bad cop who was the "fair haired boy" who could do no wrong in the eyes of the administration, and who stayed on and on and on in spite of things that should have landed them in the unemployment line, if not in jail.

But let me ask you three questions in all seriousness now:

1) Do you believe Shirley McKie was guilty of perjury?

2) Do you believe David Asbury committed murder?

3) Do you believe Abdelbasset al Megrahi was involved in downing Pan Am Flight 103?

Since you are a former Strathclyde officer, I am really interested in your insights. If you would care to expound on any of your answers, I would especially appreciate that.
