Thanks for bringing this extremely important information to our notice. Although Shirley was not jailed I can certainly identify with many of the issues raised by Mr. Rennie. The psychological impact of years of fighting an uncaring system takes a heavy toll on the victim and his or her family and friends.
As Gareth Pierce is quoted as saying,
"They come out with no money and no counselling. They have no references, it is difficult to open a bank account, you can't get a mortgage. They have no GP. You don't belong."
As these effects continue to ripple throughout their lives all sense of normality and belonging is lost. The world becomes an alien place.
Mr. Rennie’s concerns are of course only part of the debate.
It seems to me that without reform of the system that creates so many miscarriages of justice anything that is done after release, while welcome, will do little to tackle the root of the problem.
As I and others have said before we are faced with a criminal justice system that is unfit for its 21st century purpose. Unless there is change victims of miscarriages of justice and their families will continue to suffer the agonies that Mr. Rennie so graphically outlines.
As impetus increases for action in Scotland I intend to contact Mr. Rennie and brief him on some of the issues we are discussing.
